This is entry-level technician work involving public safety communications in an emergency communications center. Public Safety Emergency Dispatcher I class is expected to develop information evaluation skills to determine nature of emergency from transmitted information; process pertinent incident information into the Office of Homeland Security/Public Safety Communications’ (OHS/PSC) Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, dispatch appropriate emergency resources within assigned area and class capabilities in response to citizen requests for public safety service, and track events to identified conclusion. Under direct supervision, incumbents operate a variety of radios, telephones, keyboards, computers and other electronic devices in the County 9-1-1 Center in order to receive and respond to requests for emergency assistance, and to dispatch Police, Sheriff’s, or Fire/EMS to alleviate situations that endanger or potentially endanger lives and/or property in Prince George’s County. Contacts include emergency communications instructors and more experienced co-workers, with the purpose of learning and applying the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work; other PSC staff members, supervisors and managers, and Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs and Fire/EMS personnel, representatives of other public safety and support agencies, and the general public with the purpose of receiving and relaying information, and coordinating mutually supportive actions among public safety units and employees, and providing field Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs and Fire/EMS personnel with vital communications. Personal assistance is provided to citizens requesting emergency and non-emergency help via calls received via the 9-1-1 System in the emergency communications center.
